10 Things To Remember When Exhibiting At Your First Art Fair

Exhibiting at your first art fair is both exciting and nerve-wracking. It’s a great opportunity to showcase your work, meet new people, and gain exposure - but it also requires careful planning and preparation. Having gone through this experience myself, I’ve learned some valuable lessons along the way. Here are ten essential things to remember, split into two key areas: Set Up/ Stand Curation and During The Fair.

Set Up/ Stand Curation

1. Plan Your Stand Design and Layout

Your stand is essentially your mini gallery, and the way you present your work can make a huge difference. Think about how to display your pieces for maximum impact. Consider the height, spacing, and flow of your stand. Visitors should be able to take in your work easily without feeling overwhelmed - sometimes less is more! I sketched up different plans using Procreate to see which layout I found the most effective.

2. Packing List for Tools – Don’t Forget a ‘Twist Gimlet’!

Having the right tools is crucial for a smooth setup. As someone who usually sticks to paintbrushes rather than a toolkit, I learned the hard way that forgetting something as simple as a ‘Twist Gimlet’ (I’d never heard of one of these before) makes the setting up process very difficult. Luckily my lovely stand neighbour helped me out by lending me hers and showing me how to use it!

3. Bring Lots of Business Cards and Flyers

You will meet lots of new people during the fair - business cards, QR codes and flyers are a great way for visitors to easily take your contact details with them. Bonus tip: place some in different spots around your booth so people have more options to take one.

4. Bring a Tablecloth and Storage for Small Items

Keeping your stand looking professional and tidy is essential. A tablecloth can make a huge difference, covering up any clutter and giving your stand a polished look. Also, bring a small box or container to store personal items, extra supplies, or packaging materials - this keeps your area organised and makes finding things much easier.

5. Prepare a Pitch for Visitors

Not everyone will immediately understand your work, so be ready with a short, engaging pitch about who you are and what you create. Keep it natural - think of it as a friendly introduction rather than a sales pitch. Visitors are really interested in hearing the stories behind your pieces, so discussing your inspirations can be a great way to start the conversation.

6. Engage in Conversations

One of the best parts of an art fair is meeting people who genuinely appreciate your work. Don’t be afraid to start conversations with visitors. I know it can be a bit nerve wracking at first but the more you speak to people about your work the easier it will become. Have some business cards to hand to give to people who seem interested in your work - this can often lead to engaging conversations.

7. Take Photos of Your Booth and Event

Document your experience! Take photos of your stand, your work, and the overall event. These will be great for sharing on social media, updating your portfolio, and thanking visitors and buyers after the fair. Plus, it’s a nice way to look back on your progress.

8. Bring Something to Interact with Collectors

A little extra engagement can make your stand memorable. I did a lucky dip sticker giveaway, and it was a great way to attract visitors and start conversations. Whether it’s a small freebie, a raffle, or an interactive element, giving people something fun to do can enhance their experience.

9. Take Notes on Conversations

When you’re speaking with lots of people, it’s easy to forget details. Jot down quick notes about meaningful conversations—who showed interest in your work, potential collaborations, or any feedback you received. This makes follow-ups more personal and effective.

10. Have Fun!

Above all, enjoy yourself! Your passion for your art will shine through. The more you relax and embrace the experience, the more enjoyable it will be. Every art fair is a learning experience, so take it all in, grow from it, and celebrate the connections you make.

Exhibiting at an art fair is a big step, but with the right preparation, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Hopefully, these tips help you feel more confident and ready to make the most of your first fair. Happy exhibiting!
